Simone Russell

Artist Statement

Amanda Palmer said that “We can only connect the dots we collect, which makes everything you write about you… Your connections are the thread that you weave into the cloth that becomes the story that only you can tell. “

We all see the world differently; because we discover new things get inspired by the most ordinary of things; and most importantly question things differently. I try to let my chosen medium guide much of the world that is created within my work. For the end result, I’m hoping to create something beautiful, striking and emotionally resonant.

I have a responsibility to nurture my skills and talents. The only way I know how to make this journey worth it, is to tell my story through art.

Artist Biography

Simone Russell is a self-taught artist who works as an in-house graphic designer for an international company. Russell obtained her multi-media and graphic design diploma in 2000 but art has been a passion of hers since she was a child; she utilises her skills in both fields to complement each other.

Simone Russell entered the Absa L‘Atelier competition in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015. Russell also entered the Sasol New Signatures competition in 2012 and 2014, the latter of which earned her a spot in the top 100 which was exhibited at the Pretoria Art Museum.

Russell’s father took her to the library for the first time when she was about 4 years old since then stories, novels, myths and legends have piqued her interest and motivated her to tell stories of her own through her artwork.
